The NatWest Legal Report 2025 offers a revealing snapshot of the UK’s commercial and mid‑market law firms. With contributions from 110 firms and a combined revenue of £1.8bn, the findings highlight resilience, innovation, and the evolving priorities shaping the sector. For law firms seeking to refine their business development and marketing strategies, several themes stand out.

Fee Growth and Productivity

Median fee income grew by 12% in 2025, with smaller firms outperforming larger peers. This growth was often above budgeted expectations, driven by sharper productivity measures—time capture, chargeable hours, and scope management.

inSight: Firms that communicate efficiency and value delivery as part of their client journey will strengthen their competitive edge.

Optimism and Resilience

Despite margin pressures, 84% of firms remain optimistic about the future. Private client and residential conveyancing teams are buoyant, while litigation and family practices face challenges.

inSight:  Marketing narratives that spotlight resilience and adaptability resonate with clients and reinforce trust in uncertain times.

Technology and AI Adoption

Half of firms now use AI, primarily for administrative tasks and matter management. This marks a significant leap from just 2% in 2023.

inSight:  Positioning firms as 'future‑fit' through tech‑enabled client experiences can differentiate them in a crowded market.

External Investment and Reputation

Private equity interest in law firms continues to rise, creating competitive pressure and opportunities. Reputation management and brand clarity are becoming critical in attracting investment, clients, and talent.

inSight: A strong, minimalist brand identity signals stability and ambition—qualities investors and clients value.

Diversity, Inclusion, and ESG

  • 66% of firms report over 60% of fee earners are female.

  • 21% report over 60% of equity owners are female.

66% are investing in green energy solutions.

inSight: Inclusive and sustainable practices are not only operational priorities but also powerful marketing differentiators.
