The Next Digital Asset Nobody Is Talking About.

In an increasingly connected world, protecting your digital identity is no longer just about visibility. It's about ownership, consistency and trust.
In an increasingly connected world, protecting your digital identity is no longer just about visibility. It's about ownership, consistency and trust.

Why WhatsApp Usernames Are About More Than Convenience.

For years, professionals have been encouraged to think carefully about their digital footprint.

We secure domain names. We protect LinkedIn profiles. We claim social media handles before somebody else does.

Now, another piece of digital real estate is emerging.

WhatsApp has begun rolling out usernames, allowing people to connect without sharing a personal phone number. On the surface, it's a simple privacy feature. In reality, it could become an important part of how individuals and businesses manage their presence online.

For lawyers, consultants, business owners and anyone with an established professional profile, it may be worth paying attention.

A Small Change with Significant Implications.

Until now, WhatsApp has largely been tied to mobile numbers. If somebody wanted to contact you, they needed your phone number. Usernames change that.

Instead of directing people to a number, users will eventually be able to share a unique identifier, much like they would on LinkedIn, Instagram or X. That may sound like a minor technical update, but history tells us otherwise.

Every time a platform introduces usernames, handles or identifiers, they quickly become valuable assets. The best names are usually claimed first, and late adopters often find themselves resorting to awkward alternatives featuring numbers, symbols or variations that dilute consistency.

For professionals who have spent years building a personal brand, consistency matters.

The Growing Importance Of Digital Identity.

The legal sector has traditionally focused on visibility through referrals, rankings, networking and thought leadership. Increasingly, however, digital identity has become just as important as visibility itself.

Clients expect to find people online. They search before they enquire. They verify credentials. They look for evidence of expertise and trust. That means every digital touchpoint contributes to a wider professional reputation. LinkedIn profiles, website biographies, podcast appearances and social channels all play a role. WhatsApp usernames may soon join that list.

The strongest personal brands are often the most consistent. The same name. The same image. The same professional presence across every platform. A WhatsApp username may seem insignificant today, but so did LinkedIn profile URLs once upon a time.

The Challenge Of Impersonation.

While the introduction of usernames offers clear benefits, it also raises questions. One of the biggest concerns is impersonation.

Fake profiles have existed across social media for years. Most professionals are familiar with cloned LinkedIn accounts, fake Facebook profiles and fraudulent email addresses. The difference is that messaging platforms naturally carry a greater sense of trust. A direct message often feels more personal and more legitimate than a social media interaction. People are generally less sceptical when communication arrives through a private messaging channel.

As usernames become more widely available, there is potential for confusion if individuals fail to secure names associated with their professional reputation. That doesn't mean widespread abuse is inevitable. However, it does reinforce the importance of taking ownership of your digital identity wherever possible.

Brand Protection Isn't Just For Large Organisations.

It's easy to assume that brand protection only matters for global companies and household names. In reality, professional services firms operate on reputation.

Managing partners, founders, barristers, consultants and specialist advisers often become public-facing representatives of their businesses. Their professional identity is intrinsically linked to the credibility of the organisation they lead. That's why securing a username is not simply about technology. It's about protecting a name you've invested years building.

In many ways, this is no different from registering a domain name before launching a website or securing a LinkedIn profile before beginning a thought leadership strategy. The principle remains the same: if a digital asset is connected to your professional identity, it is worth protecting.

What Should Professionals Do Now?

The practical advice is simple. If the feature is available on your device:-

▸ Update WhatsApp to the latest version.

▸ Navigate to Settings > Account.

▸ Check whether the Username option has appeared.

▸ Reserve your preferred username.

▸ Consider enabling a Username PIN for additional protection.

Where possible, aim for the same naming convention you use elsewhere online. Consistency reduces confusion, strengthens recognition and makes it easier for people to find and verify you.

The Bigger Lesson.

The introduction of WhatsApp usernames is not really a story about WhatsApp. It's a reminder that digital identity continues to evolve. Platforms change. Features launch. New opportunities emerge. New risks follow.

The professionals who adapt most effectively are rarely the ones chasing every trend. They are the ones who recognise which changes have implications for visibility, credibility and trust. A WhatsApp username may seem like a small detail today. But digital reputation is rarely built or protected through one dramatic action. More often, it's the accumulation of small decisions made early. And this may be one of them.
